Robbie Williams dropped in Morrissey's name when talking with Jools Holland. Jools asked him what he was listening to lately, "Robbie" replied:'My new record, Morrissey's new album and Jay-Z'. Why persist in his hollow attempts at seeming credible.

  • can he even mut his excuse for an album, Morrissey and Jay Z in the same sentence?

I wish i hadn't read that because I despise Robbie Williams more than George Bush.

  • Think your being a bit harsh on R Williams. Im no fan of robbie but is liking morrissey really jumping on a bandwagon? YATQ has been well promoted and mozza has been on the press more than anyone could wish for but im convinced it's not "cool" to like mozza. i really don't think that on a whim you could come out and say "oh yeah, today I bought 'The Streets', 'Dizzy Rascal' and....'Morrissey'. We all know mozza is cool as FCUK but dont think there's a 'bandwagon'. You either like the guy and his music or you dont.

Also, I kid you not, on my desk-top at work is a mozza image and on a daily basis i have had people walk past my pc and say is that robbie williams without any hint of sarcasm. i must admit the similarities on this particular photo are striking.

    anyway, viva moz

  • Robert Williams is evil.I shall stand by this statement for the rest of my life.Am I the only one whos saw him on that show.It proved how stupid and terrible in every way he is.When the very good Greenday were performing at the end,the camera went onto Robert. He was jumping up and down with his right arm in the air.He was also singing along with them as loud as he could. All this just proves how pathetic and pointless his existence is.

  • But don't be so angry about it because Robbie Williams has mentioned this once or twice already in 2004 not just then/there/here.

He has been looking for inspiration from a number of sources and he has been looking to change his musical style/direction - which is a good thing and only talented people can do it, so give him some credit. Plus, Mr Duffy has given him a good shake up and he seems to be doing much better these days.

It seems a little petty to slag off an artist -don't believe all the things that you read about him in the 'press' - as we know.

  • I thought that show was all about real musicians and bands. Robbie Williams doesn't count. I know they try to be as eclectic as possible, but the line has to be drawn somewhere!

  • Robbie Williams has as much right to like Morrissey as you, I, Alf Garnett or my grandmother. Don't be so silly.

Whilst I'm in no way endorsing Robbie Williams, it's worth pointing out that his new co-writer is Stephen Duffy, of indie-folk band The Lilac Time.

Stephen is a doomed romantic, a fantastic songwriter, and one of England's besy lyricists. I'd certainly imagine that most Morrisey fans would really enjoy albums by The Lilac Time.
Anyway, he and Robbie hooked up because apparently Robbie was a big fan of The Lilac Time. if he's into such an obscure/cult indie band, there's certainly a good chance he was well ware of (and a fan of) Morrissey and The Smiths.

  • ...are, IMHO, very likely to be explicitly instructed to "look towards" (that's PR-speak for "blatantly copy, but keep things different enough to negate litigation") Moz's excellent history of iconic photographic poses and original style.

Knowing first hand that blatant plagiarism is standard industry practice in the martetting world, it wouldn't surprise me if RW's "creatives" actually source original Moz shots as specific reference material in their marketting briefs to the stylists and photographers (see the cover shot for RW's greatest hits comp for one very recent example).

Moz has called RW's publicity photos "fantastic", but his music "forgetable" in a recent interview. This does not surprise me at all, regardless of what you think of RW's music.

  • I've never been able to understand why robbie williams gets slated so much because I think he is a fairly pleasant guy releasing music far better than most of the rubbish in the charts at the minute.

as someone else said, he shouldn't need to pass a test proving him cool enough to listen to Moz. no doubt he'd be critisised if he expressed a dislike for morrissey too.. the man can't win.

  • Much as I detest Robbie William's music, I don't think he is name dropping. Listen to 'Real Love' There is a line in there which says 'I don't want to die, but I aint keen on living either', a paraphrasing of 'When I'm lying in my bed I think about life and I think about death and neither one particularly appeals to me'. I bet you name drop as Morrissey Fans all the time. What gives you any more right to his name than Robbie? FIRSTODIE

  • i've thought for some time now that robbie williams is trying in vain to mimick some of the Moz's performance techniques. somebody ought to tell him that he looks stupid and he can NEVER be anywhere near as good as Moz. As Liam Gallagher said, Robbie is still the fat dancer from Take That
