Here is the clip of Morrissey calling into KROQ today (kroq20040928.mp3 - 5:21, 4.91MB) with the news of the Inland Invasion make-up show. Update: 10/04 20:08 GMT: follow-up clip of Kevin and Bean talking about the possibility that it was not Morrissey on KROQ: kroq20040929.mp3.

Oct. 31, 2004 - make-up show at the Hyundai Pavilion, same location as the Inland Invasion. Tickets from Inland Invasion are entry and free parking. More details at the KROQ website.

Two Los Angeles shows (Univeral Amphitheatre, Nov. 11 and 12) were also announced, on sale Oct. 3.

Update: 09/28 17:18 GMT: Update from MorrisseyTour.com:

KROQ - Punk'd - "Morrissey" calls into KROQ

KROQ and Morrissey fans were punk’d today.

At 8:00 PST (-8:00 GMT) Morrissey called into KROQ to explain why the KROQ Inland Invasion was cancelled.

I have it on good authority that the caller was not Morrissey. The caller has been identified as Charlie Brown, a long-time member of Morrissey’s crew.

Update: 10/04 20:01 GMT: Please see the MorrisseyTour.com retraction of the above note.

  • the most surreal conversation with Moz I've ever heard -- because it was so....banal

The wit was out the window and it was simply the voice of someone who had obviously been Very ill and was still recovering (89%??) and who was up early with someone coaching him on what was okay to reveal and what wasn't...

Don't want to be defeatist, but... he has a show tomorrow night on the other side of the US?? (or is he already there?)

  • halloween??? why do a make up show on a day when so many people may have other plans??? lame. i mean, i have kids n all... not sure if i'll be able to go to this. KROQ usually does a halloween show - so this leads me to believe that they will probably throw a couple other 'big names' on the ticket with moz.

other than that - wow - i heard the whole interview and have never heard morrissey sound like that. i don't think it was all because he was sick - part of it sounded like he just woke up. and man - was he despondant?!

I mean obviously someone was telling him what to say with the massive pauses and all .. it just kind of seems like Morrissey and the internet are worlds apart, it was kind of like hearing him sing the world "download" in 'Wide to recieve' .. not being picky or anything, I just kind of found it sureally (is that a word?) amusing.

Poor Moz though, he sounds so sick still :(

  • I truly feel sorry for him, he sounds so sick (and not haha *winkwink* sick either). I hope he is well enough for the Phillie shows. He must feel so dumb promoting KRoq.com - that was weird. Aside from me genuinely feeling bad for him being ill, I think that for him to sound awkward without any wit was very stripped down, and almost kind of funny. Poor guy sounds like some manager at Sanctuary rang an alarm clock in his ear to wake him up 4 minutes prior to the interview!
You can tell he did want to console the fans he cares about, but at the same time was forced to do it on the air and promote kroq and humor the corps. Anyway, keep it up with those lozenges, Moz!

    "oh well enough said..."

  • There is no way on this earth that voice belongs to mozzer.

I think he is an englishman but I am almost certain that it is not morrissey. When he talks of the pressures of touring he says "do ya know what i mean" and its never ever morrissey.

If this was from the morrissey camp this really is weird because it sounds nothing like him and Morrissey fans really will know this.

I hope you all get what you want and that this is not a cruel hoax (im in the UK so it doesnt touch me). That is NOT MORRISSEY but if the show is real then who gives a hoot. I am just totally confused as to why they would do something so obviously fake.

  • All of you people who actually believe that's Moz, do you actually know who he is? Have you ever heard him speak? Yes I know he's ill and so may sound slightly different but there's no way in this world that that is Morrissey.
It's all wrong, the things he says, the way he words them, the accent, the tone. It's just not him, I'd bet my life and my entire savings on it.

Let's end this here. Whoever it is on that recording it's not Morrissey, no two ways about it.

  • Hey kids, this is Lightning, Morning Show producer at KROQ. Your conspiracy theories are amazing and entertaining. This morning you heard Morrissey. Not a crew member, not an American with a lame British accent. It was in fact the man himself. I spoke with Jed who woke Morrissey from a dead sleep, which is why he sounded so out of it. When Morrissey couldn't locate the concert info-sheet (that he was e-mailed last night) the lines had to be whispered in his ear. Nothing mysterious about it.

If you doubt that I'm real or telling the truth please feel free to call or e-mail me at the station.

But more importantly, if you're someone that still believes this whole thing is a hoax, Kevin & Bean would like to speak with you. Please email me at [email protected].

    Thanks!

"... turn popular song into sickness"
  • First of all, that is most definitely not Morrissey; having seen more than a few Smiths documentaries, I can safely say that that is not his voice (sick or otherwise). And in terms of KROQ/Kevin and Bean knowing that it wasn't him, I would more than likely say that they knew it was a hoax; the way they kept directly referring to him as "Morrissey" throughout the conversation (which is silly since there's no need to address someone when they're the only person you're speaking to) made it seems like it was all very wink-wink. Also, having lived in Los Angeles for years, I remember an incident many years ago when--the duo having just started at the station and desperate for ratings--had a friend call in and "confess" a murder. Well, the DJs got attention, appearing on the local news, etc. However, when that friend later got a job as a DJ at KROQ, and confessed to the hoax, Kevin and Bean were in big trouble. And even more recently, a producer from the Kevin and Bean show pretened to be comedian Jerry Lewis, and managed to get through on the phone to the president of France. So, it seems that everyone was in on this hoax, and when it comes to denials from the Kevin and Bean camp, don't believe them. On Morrissey's front, I bet he was thinking he could be like Kraftwerk and just send a showroom dummy to do his job, thinking that one Engish accent is as good as another. Maybe he can franchise himself and appear in all cities at once; a tour would only take a day...

  • Just listened to it expecting to hear some cockney trying to put on a northern accent.

I'm sorry but I'm pretty sure that was him. He didn't sound as animated as he normally does but there's a richness to his voice which is pretty unmistakeable if you've heard his voice enough.
    Anonymous -- Tuesday September 28 2004, @12:10PM (#126899)
  • i listen to kevin and bean daily.

trust me - they would NOT spoof this. they conducted the interview just as they normally would. they interviewed morrissey in the same manner a couple months ago.

that murder thing was 12 years ago. and they were suspended for it and have never screwed around like that since.

it was moz for sure - and if he thinks it is important enough to dispell this rumor it will be posted on his official site.

  • Hi guys - I'm afraid I'm gonna have to post anonymously here, so you can believe me or not believe me - but the truth is that the caller was NOT Morrissey himself. It was one of his staff, as some of you rightly guessed. Lightning is trying to claim otherwise because KROQ has a vested interest in sustaining the 'integrity' of their announcement. But in truth the caller was not Morrissey. Believe me or don't believe me, that's all I can say.
