'1985', the opening song on the Manic Street Preachers' new album, 'Lifeblood', features the line: "Morrissey and Marr gave me choice in 1985". It's a fantastic album by the way...buy it when it's out!

  • I keep hearing "The Love Of Richard Nixon" on the radio and really can't wait for this album! I had no idea about the reference...imagine that.

The Manics are a great band and I'm glad they're still going strong after so much in so many years!

These people are evil and should have been drowned at birth. How can anybody have forgotten the comment made ONSTAGE about Michael Stipe, at a delicate time when detrimental rumours about his health were rampant i.e. "We hope he goes the same way as Freddie Mercury!"

Such 'people' do not deserve . . . anything at all. Can you smell the venom?

  • MSP are a great band and should be cool to hear ... but didn't they break up and have their "farewell" tour a couple of years ago? :\

  • Sounds interesting to me. At least Bradfield & Co. had the good taste of mentioning Morrissey AND Marr, the latter still being a little bit overlooked in recent days of (deserved) Moz-hysteria.

"Slit my eyes, for they'll remember..."
  • I remember Nicky Wire on the telly in Britain calling Moz "irrelevent" and "a sad old man", around the time of the National Front Disco and all the ridiculous fuss about Morrissey's "Racist" tendencies. Harsh words indeed from a substandard guitarist in one of the most pretentious and self regarding bands ever shat into existence.

  • Nicky Wire was actually a big fan of The Smiths in his youth, in a 2001 interview he said he was a big fan of them right from the start, then went off them for a long time but had recently got back into them; and since 2001 in general he has been mentioning both The Smiths and Morrissey a lot in positive ways and as an important influence on him when he was young, when the subject has come up in interviews - do a search for Manics on Morrissey-solo archives and you should find some of these positive references. So this re-appreciation for the Smiths by the Manics has been going on a few years now, they're not just climbing on the 2004 Morrissey revival bandwagon.

As for the negative comments they made about Morrissey in the early 90s: the Manics made a show of hating a lot of things in the early 90s and they are completely different now in a lot of ways. They have said that some of the things they said and did back then were just to try and shock people and that they have grown out of a lot of those attitudes. Nicky Wire also said in a 2002 interview that he admires Morrissey. So no need to hold a grudge over comments that were made over a decade ago and that they have clearly changed their minds about, as shown by interviews in recent years.
