The brilliant writer JT Leroy has good things to say about Morrissey. I wonder if Morrissey has read his books, 'Sarah' and 'The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things' - they're sad and beautiful and funny, not unlike (many of) Morrissey's songs.

'..What' the last song you've written with your band Thistle? What's it about?

We just finished one called 'mattress', and it's really playful. It's about a girl waiting for a boy, and it's fun, kind of old-fashioned. I haven't written a lot of love songs. I used to write a lot of songs about my mother.

What have you been listening to lately?

A lot of Morrissey. I love him and the new album. There's a band called Smoosh that's two 12 year old girls. I write a lot of bios, too, and I'm working on one for Bryan Adams and that's really fun. Also Bright Eyes and Nancy Sinatra...'

Also, in his diary on his website (link)
he wrote the following in a July entry:

'...I done just got invited to write Nancy Sinatra's bio for her new one on Morrissey's label. I never reckoned I would see my name any wheres near the name Sinatra! Hope ya'll got the new Morrissey, coz Lord that is one fuckin amazing cd. I cant stop listening to it...'

and further down:

'...It is wonderful to have a dialogue in any forum of criticism. I've loved reading the response Michael Moore has had to the intense criticism campaigns against his film. I look forward to interviewing him soon about this very thing for the DVD release. This ain't a replay of my childhood where I have to take a slap. And someone talkin shit about a film that I believe in that they have not even seen? Yeah, it happens to be my book.. so I'll spend more time defending it when called upon. But I would do so for the Morrissey record too. For Billy Corgan, for our Termie list. For my family. I protect what I value. Don't you?...'

  • the name Morrissey seems to be uttered from everyone's lips now...Leroy's got quite a 'celebrity' fan club, Morrissey could be next in line!

  • Apropos LeRoy (of course he loves Moz): you also should all check out Gus Van Sant's new movie when it comes out, which is based upon LeRoy's book THE HEART IS DECEIPTFUL ABOVE ALL THINGS (also a splendid read). That said, of course the affinities between all three artists (Van Sant, LeRoy, and Morrissey) are numerous.

  • Shall we have the same number of responses as when a different celeb writer said he didn't like YATQ?

    I think not.
