In this week's NME, there's yet another mention of our bequiffed hero. NME describes his comeback in glowing terms, and says Reading/Leeds will be the highpoint of his Summer, an opportunity to bask in the glory of his return to form and to the heart of British pop music, and a chance to sell his new material to a few more non-believers.

There's a quote from a Sanctuary rep. who says his comeback has nothing to do with "his 7 year exodus" and everything to do with the fact he's a legendary genius, or words to that effect!

She says we can expect more from Morrissey this Summer, that this is not the end of his high profile Summer (possibly referring to his recent week in the studio and perhaps a follow-up single to "Let Me Kiss You?" A week seems a long time for a b-side or two, especially when he has "the Slums mums" and a few others left over from earlier this year)

Elsewhere, there are a few other mentions of Morrissey, one by an artist playing Reading who said he "will not be watching Morrissey... not that I dislike him... I was just never a depressed Smiths kid.. I was into the Velvet Underground"

  • Well, I agree that the article/excerpt in question is generally glowing, but they do make one catty comment at the start, saying that ten years ago Moz was a "whipping post" for his 'Madstock' debacle and "for being generally rubbish". Which struck me as weird since 1994 was the year of 'Vauxhall and I'. Perhaps they thought 'Southpaw' was out that year (hey, 'Southpaw' lovers, I'm not saying its dreadful, just that NME have said before THEY think it is). Also, the Sanctuary rep in question says that Moz has "star quality", not that he's a "legendary genius". Ordinary Boys (inevitably) say they are looking forward to seeing Morrissey at Reading.

  • another band, can't remember who, say they're baffled by his new popularity and would rather not watch a 'has been' at the festival.

as if Velvet Underground and The Smiths are mutually exclusive. anyone who has the opportunity [incredibly convienient opportunity] to see Moz live and doesnt citing they were never a "depressed Smiths kid" isa complete tit.

  • ........are the band who accouse Moz of being "a has-been", saying they can't understand why he's newly popular "just because of marketing". They say they prefer "up and coming bands, not has-beens". Which is unbelievably arrogant. As I've already said, let us hope that THEIR legacy is as strong as that of the Smiths in fifteen years time and that THEY write so many fantastic songs as Morrissey has done. Why should he not still perform/make music if he so desires? Their comment was FAR worse than that of Har Mar Superstar, which was essentially just a preference for The Velvet Underground, if somewhat stupidly expressed. May they be flayed by helicopter blades and their carcasses flung into a vat of hydrochloric acid.
