Lazy Dyke has posted this on the Message Board. (link) Great Debate BBC 6 Music Posted By: Lazy Dyke Date: Sunday, 22 August 2004, at 10:55 a.m. On the main page of BBC 6 Music there's a small picture of Morrissey (Kill Uncle cover shot), beside a link to the Great Debate page. The topic is "Better In A Band: Are solo artists ever better than the bands that spawned them?" The presenter, Mark Sutherland, talks about different artists who have gone solo after the dissolution of their bands, and writes briefly of Moz: "Morrissey – wrote a million genius songs with The Smiths, precisely two without them (Suedehead and The First Of The Gang To Die, since you ask)." (I would have to disagree with this assertion - I mean, he doesn't even rate "Everyday Is Like Sunday?!). People are asked to contribute comments on the same page.

This is a good question. Some artists achieve larger success when they leave a band (fatboy slim/norman cook, morrissey, sting, annie lennox, natalie merchant, pete best, etc) but 'are they ever better' is the question and i cant seem to put my finger on anyone who actually is. This will be rolling around my head the rest of the day.

what an ignorant statement. (Score:1)
its as if all hes ever heard of Moz's solo career are his bookend singles. Moz' entire catalouge is packed with genius [even Maladjusted]. ithink the arguement that Moz's solo career is greater than his career with The Smiths could be made very strongly- one thing his solo career definitely has on The Smiths is longevity [another is commercial success].

Sutherland is right, but.......... (Score:0)
Few of these stand up to the Smiths' best songs, but some, like 'Sister, I'm A Poet' and 'Jack The Ripper' and 'Boxers', do come fairly near.
