The Worst Rock Stars Ever by Dr. David Thorpe, Something Awful

As countless episodes of “Behind the Music,” untold numbers of gritty rock and roll documentaries and thousands of pages of pretentious music magazine long-form road interviews have drilled into our brains time and time again, being a rock star is a job. A tough one, at that. Sure, it’s a job that involves quite a bit more traveling, fucking and drinking than any other job (with the possible exceptions of “pilot” or “pirate”), but it’s still as soul-crushing a vocation as any other. As there would be in any profession, there’s bound to be certain percentage of rock stars that just plain suck at it.

  • It's funny how the only thing people can bemoan about morrissey is this perception of him being 'the pope of mope'. very lazy, very boring, and so predictable. maybe we can start 'the 10 worst journalist list' ............

  • David Thorpe's online column is among the worst ever - I've heard it's supposed to be ironic/funny, but either way it's just boring. Really, David, we don't care about your opinion at all. No-one cares. Please stop writing now. It is entirely pointless.

  • so morrissey's a little bitch. but he makes beautiful music with witty and heartfelt remarks. he's a hot piece of ass. he makes me laugh and cry all at once. he knows so much about life and love (apparently) and he pours his heart out. i adore him.

so jobriath was a total fairy and a complete "commercial" failure. he made exquisite musical compositions with a vocal punch (few can successfully sing about fellatio and prostitution with such class). he was a godlike creature in appearance. he went away totally unapppreciated. i adore him as well.

thorpe should be skinned and dipped in boiling butter.

  • Seriously, Something-awful is a great site, hell I'm a member there. But everything this guy says you gotta take with a grain of sand, he even rips on Led Zepp and he's a big fan of theirs.
Just gotta lighten up and see the humour in it.

  • Is the bit about Morrissey trying to book Jobriath as an opener in 1992 true??

  • Given the little definition of what a "Rock Star" is supposed to be, I think there is no doubt Mozza doesn't fit this, so, it follows that he'd be on the "worst" list.

I don't think I'd ever really claim that Morrissey is a "rock star." How odd.....

  • I read or heard once, ages ago, that Johnny was studying for a degree in Marine Biology at UCLA.

Does anyone know if this was true or not?

  • "Lowest Point – In 1992, the aforementioned mopester Morrissey tried to secure Jobriath as an opening act, being unaware of his death."

How on earth could he possibly know this? Anyone have any pro or con evidence?

  • Moz has been on SA loads of times and had loads of piss-taking about him. I just knew that eventually one day someone would post something about it up on here and some people who do not understand what "tongue in cheek" means would miss the irony. I thought it was very funny

Something Awful and Morrissey-Solo are both great sites, but i do wish people would stop posting such non-news items on the front page.

  • Calm down, dudes!! I often wonder about the lack of indifference and self-irony among the SMITHS/MORRISSEY community. If you can't have a laugh about a satirical approach on old Mozzer, why can't you just ignore it then. Especially when contemplating the fact, that Morrissey was very well aware of the fact, that he'd be the target to many people, due to him just being the way he is. And although I genuinely love him for that particular stubbornness, it's safe to say, that you have to understand, that there are a lot of folks out there, who don't share all of those Morrisseyesque views, things etc. So, I think it is more interesting (and funnier anyway) to handle it like "something awful", than to slag him off in a way some "mere" journalists do. And if it's done actually good, I don't mind having a laugh, just as I can whole-heartedly have a laugh on myself sometimes. And guess what: I bet my arse, that Morrissey himself is more than often taking the piss out of himself as well, it's just that most people don't get it. Wasn't his odd sense of humour a topic even in the very early SMITHS days anyway, when Steven Patrick was smiling about the more absurd things, and nobody around (except for Linder, probably) knew exactly why? After all life is absurd, so you'd better stop wetting your pants and complain about literally ANYone not worshipping by the throne of the Mancunian Don, eh...!?

  • I bet Moz loves Die Hard. (How could anybody not love Die Hard??)

That was pretty funny. I can just picture Moz in a boat with a flowery shirt (do they put gladioli on Hawaiian shirts?) enjoying a drink listening to the Beach Boys! HA!!! That's it...I'm inviting Mozzy to my next pool party.

Good picture too...he looks quite happy and content.

If you don't see the humor in that article, maybe you should stay away from the live journal and get out a bit more.

  • I agree with every word of this review. YATQ is, lyrically one of Morrissey's lowest points and you can sure as hell tell he's spent years in the phony, condecending pop star stasis field which is LA. "Where the president is never black, female or gaaaaay" in a voice so off-key I can barely stand it, I just cannot believe this is the same man who wrote the brilliant "Reel Around the fountain," "National Front Disco" and dozens of other classic, stunning pop moments. So we pick presidents on skin color? Sexual orientation? Man I expect BIG things from Morrissey and after hearing this tired cliche-fest, I can only hope he'll stop recording and not stain my memories of his early years any further.
