From Jed Weitzman:

We are surprised to see that Ana Sanabia and the Benicassim Festival have seen fit to put their version of events up on their web site. We find this unprofessional and unhelpful.

Any of you who have read it should be aware that you are obviously hearing only one side of the story. It is clear that this is a reaction on their part to our official statement which we still stand by.

It is not our intention to get into details or into a minute by minute account of what happened. We have been advised against doing so because the events in question are the subject of an insurance claim and will almost certainly end up the subject of some kind of legal scrutiny or action.

One very important fact we can make absolutely and unequivocally clear is that Morrissey not playing at Benicassim had nothing whatsoever to do with money. Indeed, not playing there has cost him a very considerable sum. Morrissey has proved repeatedly over his long and illustrious career that his priorities are his music and his fans. He would never miss a concert unless he was absolutely unable to be there or unless it was impossible for him to perform for other insurmountable reasons.

Yours sincerely,

Jed Weitzman
Sanctuary Artist Management

  • It's nice to hear both sides of the story - we can make our own minds up. Personally, I agree with what Jed said - It probably cost Morrissey money to cancel the show. As for the "insurance claim" bit - very interesting...One can only imagine what happened.

  • I think Jed's account of what happened makes much more sense. I'm glad he took the time to put his view forward. I agree with him - Morrissey always puts his fans and music before anything else. Especially at the moment: He's really into his music just recently, more positive and hardworking than we've seen for ages. I'm sure he wouldn't cancel a big show like this for no good reason.

  • Really, it's too bad some of you spent a ton of dough to go see Morrissey in Spain...those of you who did have the right to be upset. But none of you know Morrissey and to make the staements that were made and are bound to be made is silly. Live & let live. There's really a lot more to life than seeing one person sing a few songs. Get a grip.

We know that is not true. Maybe sometimes, but not all fo the times.

  • I thought myself the Benicàssim statement lost all credibility with the stuff about him demanding more money. It's like they were so determined to paint him as the villain that they embellished it too much.

  • Looks like some sort of standoff between the promoters and Morrisseys' management with each trying to appear as the victim. Great drama but no consolation to the fans who missed the show. More legal wrangling due in the near future, ther might be a song or two in it for him on the next album!

  • It's hard to believe that Moz would be so plotting and malicious, letting his fans down above all for money. I think people let their skeptism run away with them; believing a tabloid-esque account of what happened. I wonder what legal actions will happen - the festival suing him, and them needing the faulty aircraft facts as proof? Such bitterness.
And for those bitter who pilgrimaged to Spain, I don't feel bad for you if you have the time off and money to 'up' and go to Spain just for a show. You'll get over it.

  • I applaud you. It's nice to see someone going the extra mile to stand up for their artist and, although nobody wants this to degenerate into a slanging match, that money claim badly needed refuting by the look of some other posts. I can understand Heineken's motives in trying to get themselves off the hook, but to try to achieve that by fabricating events is unforgivable. I felt this was a well-timed response from Sanctuary.

Not another legal action, please. (But if there is I'll organise a whip-round at Preston Guild Hall)

  • There have been plenty of rumours of pulling out of festival due to negative responses from festival crowds.
Of course, not everyone there is there to see the great man as you and I are, but thats ridiculous.
As for never missing concerts, US tour with the Smiths springs to mind.

  • Jed, I know I speak for many other die hards here when I say, dont you think its a little irresponsible of Morrisseys camp to have not issued a statement regarding Alain Whyte? Many people care a great deal about him and are genuinely concerned as to the nature of his illness and wether or not he will be Morrisseys guitarist in the future. He has done an enormous amount for Morrissey and the fans know this. We are not just blind worshipers at the alter.

I hope you read this as it seems you are a reader of the site. An explanation is long over do,

  • so who cares if jed is moz's fuck or not? what is clear to me is that morrissey didn't want to play, so they're arguing like old ladies over a few thousand bucks, and the real victims in this bad soap drama are the thousands of fans who traveled to the festival to see their idolized prima donna and were as fucked as this jed weitzmann queer.

  • So why couldn't he play Paris this year? Or the end of the David Bowie-Tour? Or Dresden in Germany when he didn't like the arena? Or L.A. some years ago? Or stop playing in Chicago some years ago after 20mins?

He must have a whole lot oh sh*t going on in his life that he is so often unable to play anywhere.
And he cares so much for his fans, that he hadn't released an album in 7 years and didn't tour that much in that period of time either. But as long as he releases a Best Of Album or a Live Album every other year thats fine, cause Morrissey-fans are easy to please.

Keep dreaming and I hope that Morrissey will one day remember how it all began.

  • we were first invited to read a statement by the Sanctuary Artist Management (SAM) saying that the plane had technical difficulties, so the band was forced to fly back to London and was delayed.

Then we hear that Moz was actually ill, as read again on the Bencassim website, quoting SAM.

Both sides of the story ... which story and which side is actually taken by the SAM?

  • If the venue and /or the organisers can sue then so should the fans who were obviously also let down by the no show. Regardless of whether or not he played the organisers sold at least some tickets on the fans understanding that he was playing. Is it therefore acceptable for the fans to sue or demand their money back from either the organisers or Sanctuary? The fans seem to be the last people on anyones minds during his debacle.

  • I Like to excuse me for writing in Spanish, i don't write well in english
