Saw the mention of the Benicàssim festival's detailed side of the cancellation by Lucy on the general board (link):

FIB Heineken's version of Morrissey's cancellation (English)

Nota de prensa FIB Heineken cancelación Morrissey (Spanish)

Excerpt:

Ana Sanabia inmediately calls Jed Weitzman who then said: " I am here, beside a very ill man. I have had to call an ambulance", but he declines to specify the concrete reasons why he is feeling so sick at the same time he insists that Morrissey is very ill and that there is just no way of making him enter the plane so the performance has to be called off.

Ana Sanabia then let the organization know that Morrissey was finally cancelling, to what the organization asks: "what if he performs tomorrow?", though the artist´s agency had never considered the latter as an option-. Ana Sanabia then phones Jed Weitzman again to offer him to perform on Sunday and the artist accepts but asks for an extra 60.000 € to be added to the already accepted fee. The organization refused to pay that sum and Jed then remained in a stand-by state, waiting for "something" to be offered to the artist so that they start (or not) preparing things for Sunday. At the same time this happens, Gary Trew had been checking out the times set for the Escenario Verde on Sunday and decided that they would choose Franz Ferdinand´s slot. With this new situation to be considered, and after studying every kind of possible re-scheduling possibilities for Sunday-including time and stage changes, etc.-as well as considering the respect which is due to the potentially affected artists and their fans, the organization decided to not consider this option any longer. On the other hand, there were no guarantees that Morrissey would fly in on Sunday.

Finally, on Saturday August 7th, around 23.15, Jed Weitzman sent an email to Ana Sanabia which is reproduced below:

Dear Ana

Per our conversation this evening I have now released the charter planes that I had on hold for tomorrow. I appreciate your efforts to find time for Morrissey to play the festival tomorrow and understand your position that it is entirely impossible.

We all deeply regret that this medical crisis made it impossible for Morrissey to be there today.

  • Someone explain this to me... he was too sick to board a plane? Or is this code (to the skeptics) of an emotional crisis. Damn. I hope he's ok then.

  • Food for thought on a boring Monday at the office: After reading that whole explanation on the link, I figure Moz has said in interviews, particularly the Importance of Being Moz on BBC that he HATES flying, "because it's not safe; you could die". If his aircraft was faulty and had to be called back down, I don't blame him for being 'sick' over it, needing an ambulance. A drama queen maybe, but hey, he's alive.

  • 60,000 euros and he would have done the gig! I dont get it. Would Morrissey still have got some money even though he didn't attend the Gig? It seems 0bvious that he couldnt give a flying one about his fans if he could have gone (for extra cash).

Selfish, greedy and self obsessed imo.

  • Maybe it's just me but I really don't see how any record company or artists management would encourage anybody in their care to attempt to gain extra money for an appearance in this fashion. Fine if he didn't want to do the show but to try to get extra cash for doing the rescheduled date seems at the very least unprofessional and downright cheeky. I have difficulty believing this story. Whatever the reason for the no-show I don't think the lack of extra money prevented him from doing the Sunday.

  • but if anyone has had the charming experience of a panic attack, especially in the face of something as stereotypically panic-provoking as flying, I'm sure they'll understand wanting to cancel in a situation where a quick decision was needed. It's no news that he's scared of flying anyway. And quite frankly, you wouldn't get me on a plane suffering "technical problems" for much less than 60,000 Euros either...
I do sympathise with those people who were let down and lost out monetarily. But look on the bright side - at least you aren't those poor buggers at Morrissey's management! :-D

True friends stab you in the front.
  • any problems with the plane before take off could've caused a physiological reaction in him.

Sort of like when you wait and wait for a Moz show and then it's canceled at the last minute and the disappointment makes you get sick...

60,000 euros and a new plane would clear up anybody's sniffles, though.

  • If Morrissey was having an anxiety attack then I don't blame him for cancelling. You can't get up in front of thousands of people and sing if you're all panicked and sweaty and having heart palpitations. Asking for more money, though, was way out of line. If Moz has any integrity he'll put on a free show for his fans in Spain who missed out.

  • Moz is unreliable. He wasn't sick, he was just pretending so he wouldn't have to go to work that day, not caring about it's effect on the show, the promoters, or his fans. Typical Morrissey.

Everyone calls in sick now and again, but there is a huge differance between a person who works 40 hours a week and a rock star who is expected to sing for 90 minutes for a boatload of cash. It is just inexcusable. And then, he releases a BS story about plane malfunctions.

Some free advice for you Moz:
IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PLAY THE SHOW, DON'T BOOK THE SHOW!

  • These things really do sort the wheat from the chaff amongst his fans - like his choice to play places like Bridlington and Paisley, he wants you to make that extra bit of effort. You also need that extra bit of effort when it comes to understanding and 'putting up with'. If he plays any show and for whatever reason is under par, physically or mentally, it is more than likely that some of you will get straight on here and gripe about it. He looked peaky, look at this photographic evidence, he fluffed his lines - was it intentional or not? he didn't chat much between songs etc etc. He is entitled to 'call in sick', as we all are. We all have the right to be ill in private, surely...That live moment is all there is, but unfortunately it's documented and over analysed to bits no sooner has it finished. Whether he plays the same songs and utters the same banter, it's a one off event.Morrissey is aware of this more than most. If it is not perfect, in terms of what you expect from yourself, wouldn't *you* rather stay at home away from the camera glare? If you don't turn up to work, it will hardly be judged in a similar way. And the truth is, we have all made excuses, some totally incredulous, when we simply don't feel up to doing something.
It's difficult being a Morrissey fan, of course, it always has been - but ...wheat and chaff. And if you're honest, you kind of like that.
