so i guess i can announce this now... it looks like the movie version of the book is rolling along. alex steyermark, who directed Prey For Rock N' Roll is going to direct it, and Ross Katz who produced Lost in Translation is going to exec-produce. no word yet on who will be playing Joe, Miki or Mozzer but i'm hoping for Denzel Washington, Carol Channing and James Dean, in that order (i will of course be making a cameo as Jane's cat Iggy). there are still some kinds to be worked out (soundtrack esp.) but the biz part is finally a go so i'm happy to share it here first, with my... like 30 or so loyalists.
coming not too soon to a theater near you.

ps. casting and (Smiths and non-Smiths/Moz) soundtrack suggestions welcome

  • I loved this book, and think the movie will be amazing.

My picks for Joe: John Cusack (duh), Jason Schwartzman, Ethan Hawke, Ewan McGregor, Zach Braff, Jake Gyllenhaal

For Miki: Franka Potente, Zooey Deschanel, Miki from Lush, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Julia Stiles (only because she has said she likes the Smiths)

  • I read the book and got some pleasure out of it, but its primary problem is that the arc is so weird--it gets progressively less interesting. The most engaging part of the book for me was all the early stuff in high school, which I definitely didn't expect to be the case. His interaction with the Smiths was pretty underwhelming. Still, I'd certainly see the movie. Casting as I pictured it:
    Joe-Casey Affleck
    Micki-Rose Byrne

  • It would make a cool movie, sure, but will it actually be like the book? Think about it; most of the time, the movies that are "based upon" novels end up not resembling them whatsoever, or only relaying key aspects with added juicy drama -- pump it full of more sex, violence, drugs, the whole bit -- for affect. If this film is like the book nearly 100%, then, sure, it's worth my buck. But once they start having our beloved Smiths characters possess filthy, Sopranos-esque potty mouths, then I'm outta heeere.

Doubt that they'd go through with it? Well, we'll see. I'll keep an open mind. And for affect, I'm not placing any bets. ;)

  • exactly who is/are developing this film?

are they involved with any production companies? studios?

Remember people, there is a good chance that is film to be, like many others, can get stuck in development hell.

It's another case of 'wait and see...'

  • I hadn't heard about the book so I took a look at the site and read about it and all I have to say is "...oh, please..."

I've been a fan since I can't even remember but I have never read books of these sort. I can't bother with other people's opinions on the band and Morrissey himself.

I remember watching Mike Leigh films and finding it great that the actors wore Smiths t-shirts but this is 80's America!!! The Smiths poster in the record store in "Pretty In Pink" looked strange!

Good luck with the film, I might look out for it.

    ...because we must...
  • "Just Like a Movie Star" - the 6ths, for the scene where Joe and Miki kiss in the cab, because it's just so freaking beautiful

"This Monkey's Gone to Heaven" - The Pixies, It's mentioned in the book

"Lucky For You That We're Friends" - Pulp, even though it's already prominently featured on the "Great Expectations" soundtrack
