Back in 1988 I formed a rockabilly band called 'Born Bad' with a guy who shared a flat with my brother, called Alain Whyte (who was an apprentice welder for Camden council!). I introduced Alain to Spencer Cobrin (training as a chef), who I'd jammed with a few times (in the band that became 'Carlos and the Bandidos'). We all lived in North London. We found a slap bass player called Ian Arrow through 'LOOT' newspaper, rehearsed a bit and started gigging. We played lots of dives around North London, including the old Dingwalls, and I used to cart all our stuff around in my old Escort van. Alain was off with the pixies most of the time, and we never knew whether he'd forget to turn up for rehearsals - or even gigs! He was the most obviously talented member of the band though, and caould play piano, harmonica and had a good rockin' voice. It was all good fun for about 9 months, then Ian left and was replaced by Gary Day (a friend of Spencer's) for a couple of gigs. Then I left to join another band that seemed to have better prospects (after recording a few tracks in Boz Boorer's studio with the original line-up) ... how wrong I was! I saw Alain in a Soho pub about 6 years ago, and am still in touch with Ian. Have some original Born Bad photos/demos if anyone's interested ... Alain and Spenny (as he was called then) look about 12!

  • There are two Born Bad tracks on a UK rockabilly comp. called 20 Blasters From Blighty. It also features various stuff Boz has done over the years. If you like the rockabilly it's pretty good stuff.

  • Interesting story. Would like to hear your thoughts around the time they quite suddenly became Morrissey's band in the "Sing Your Life" video and joined the "Kill Uncle" tour?

Have always been a fan of Alain -- so like many others here, I'm concerned about his current condition, and whether he'll be back on the stage with Moz soon. Any insight, Mr. Bolton?

    Thanks.

    • We were all still quite involved in the London rockabilly scene when I left Born Bad (it was my choice of name, which is why the chaps re-invented themselves as the Memphis Sinners). There was a bit of rivalry between bands on the local scene, and no one could quite believe it when Alain, Spenny & Gary landed the Morrissey gig. Most people, including me, were incredulous: "how can they play that kind of music?", but were secretly pleased for them. I remember a rumour that Morrissey was going to come and see us play when I was still in the band (through Boz) but this never came to anything, and I was pissed off with these kind of empty promises being made and constantly having to babysit Alain (he was a lovely fella, but pretty eccentric!). It was a lost opportunity for me, but the guys deserved their success ... they had no other prospects! "We hate it when our friends become successful"!!

  • It's really interesting to find out how these things start, as a fellow musician you can sometimes forget how much slog goes into the ground work to something actually happening and can be quite dis-heartening. The fact you are pleased for the boys is a credit to you, I think I'd be a very bitter man.

  • I seem to vaguely remember you as a guy that worked for the saatchi ad agency. I wasnt a working musician then, but I think you had a band with Mouse. Were you mates with Julian and Eleanor?
