From ManchesterOnline (link): LOOKS like there could be a mixed response from Morrissey fans to the latest book to be penned on the singer. Morrissey: Scandal and Passion, by David Brett, is published by Robson Books on September 30, 2004.. And the author says that the former frontman of The Smiths could be in for some rum reading. "I've gone into his private life as much as I dare, legally," he tells me. "This is going to be a warts-and-all book. Fans and fanatics aren't going to like it, because they see him as walking on water, but no one's perfect. "Morrissey is a normal human being, like everyone else, but I think that there will still be quite a few shocks." From Amazon (Link): Synopsis Britain's most articulate singer-songwriter remains a complex individual whose lyrics opt for realism, opinion, waspish wit, irony, asexuality, melancholy and love. In this candid biography, Morrissey's friends and the members of his entourage speak frankly to David Brett to produce a fascinating study of the iconic star. It is packed with revelations; accusations of racism and fascism; confessions of physical abuse; suggestive, anarchic, witty, sexy, and never before seen letters to a penpal that read like Joe Orton; Morrissey's gay-bashing; the accusations of supporting paedophilia; High Court royalty battles and the public shaming; the attack on Cliff Richard; renegade fans' attempts to sabotage his career; his script submission to 'Coronation Street'. The book includes a full discography, numerous original photos, and a comprehensive bibliography.

It was always inevitable that in coming back into the public eye sniffy journalists would be extremely quick in scoffing at the devotion Morrissey's music brings. Fine. What is tiresome is that more wannabe authors will try to both scoff at, as well as expecting to sell to, loyal fans in what will likely amount to yet sensationalist trashy tabloid character assisination.
Look at how its being marketed. Cynics will expect this and say no-ones read the thing yet so how can we dismiss it. Ha. 'Warts and all'. Cliche cliche cliche. 'Ive got as far legally as I can'. What as far as you cant get sued for liable?
The music speaks for itself, I don't see a need to find a greater truth. The MEN gig was stunning and I stand by that however mixed the reviews are getting. I won't be buying this book - I stopped bothering reading about Moz or the smiths ten years ago. Morrissey is human yes, but he needs to be loved. Just like everybody else does.

Having been a devoted fan for 20 years - I have searched my soul and can truly say - that never having actually met Morrissey - nor ever really wanted to - I can honestly say I don't a fuck about his private life and have no interest in finding out what colour underpants he wears - if he dresses on the left or sleeps on the right, the only bits that interest me are the ones that are relevent to me - and I get all that from the music everything else...
means nothing to me about my life!!!
I wish these people would give him a break and go back to stalking the Olsen Twins.

Finsbury Park incident/NME fallout
2. "confessions of physical abuse"
Something to do with his school boy days
3. "suggestive, anarchic, witty, sexy, and never before seen letters to a penpal that read like Joe Orton"
Those much seen and discussed letters from that Robert? guy in Scotland who corresponded with Morrissey before he was famous
4. "Morrissey's gay-bashing"
Probably some nasty Elton John or Boy George comment he's made in interviews...
5. "the accusations of supporting paedophilia"
The Reel About the Fountain controversy
6. "High Court royalty battles and the public shaming"
The devious, truculent, and unreliable incident
7. "the attack on Cliff Richard"
What the??? I can't believe this warrants it's own mention. But, again, probably some cheeky remark Morrissey made about Cliff in some old interview 10 years ago.
8. "renegade fans' attempts to sabotage his career"
The unpaid crew member incident that happened hear a year or so ago
9. "his script submission to 'Coronation Street'"
Now if he's got the actual script that might be interesting. But, something tells me he doesn't.

I'm certainly open to reading biographies on Morrissey, but as yet, a biographer who is worthy has not come along.

hopefully this book won't rake in too much profit... i mean, john lennon was an addict and a wife beater but it doesn't change the fact that he was a great musician. same holds true for moz.
and as i'd rather not have him read about my exploits, i'll give him the same courtesy. not entirely a fair comparison, i know, but close enough.
