Sonny Jim writes:

Leading UK gay magazine Gay Times has 'You Are The Quarry' as its album of the month (in the May edition).

Review reads:

"Morrissey gets new solo deal! Morrissey releases new album! Its almost too much excitment to deal with. A hundred thousand gay men across the country dive into their local record shop and reverently shell out £16.99 to find out what their great leader is up to. So, what is Morrissey up to? Seven years out of the spotlight haven't mellowed the man. He's still full of venom and bitterness, and, if you believe the lyrics, self-loathing. Lyrically, the usual checklist of obsessions have been duly gone through and ticked off: English heritage, rejection, petty criminals...

But this isn't Morrissey sitting back on his laurels or rehashing former glories; he has fresh fish to fry. For starters, there is a dig at America, the Mancunian's current home, and its dubious foreign policy in 'America Is Not The World'. 'Where the president is never black, female or gay, until that day, you've got nothing to say to me' he sings, later referencing George Bush as the man with 'steely blue eyes with no love in them'. Pop Idol is another topic that doesn't escape the 40-something's wrath. In 'The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores', he spits: "It's just more lock-jawed pop stars, thicker than pig-shit, nothing to convey. They're scared to show intelligence, it might smear their lovely career'.

Perhaps the most insightful lyric, however, is on the closing track, 'You Know I Couldn't Last', in which Moz reflects on his recent years of obscurity, seemingly announcing himself as a has-been, and describing the music business as a 'cash register ringing' that 'weighs so heavy on my back'. 'The in the end your royalties bring you luxuries...oh, but the squalor of the mind', he groans as the song fades out. Curious stuff indeed.

So, what about the music? Things follow on nicely from his last, great albums of the 90s 'Your Arsenal' and 'Vauxhall & I', thankfully side-stepping 1997's lacklustre 'Maladjusted'. His voice has matured into a warm croon, and it settles nicely over the big production, big guitars and bigger choruses. The epic feel is only marred by a couple of formulaic moments, including 'Let Me Kiss You', but even they are saved by the great lyrics. Over all, 'You Are The Quarry' is a good album rather than a truely great one from a man who clearly still has a lot to say. The question is, will anybody still be listening?

  • CD of the month and rightly so.
Everyone's talking and will be listening. Lots of mention in the gay press worldwide and some interesting threads on certain gay sites.
I went clubbing last week in my WeHateItWhen t-shirt and for the first time had to beat the Dykes off with a stick, not an easy feat, they all wanted to know about that song.

Freaken Gay Blades. If Morrissey was gay, don't you think he'd act like the rest of you little feminen bitches and speak out. Don't you think think that by now he would have been exposed?? Don't you think he would sing about receiving a meat dagger instead of meatis murder. I think it's about time all you gays find a new idol. Give the guy a break and take away your shity burdens.

  • Good on Attitude and Gay Times, about time Morrissey was adopted as a hero in those parts. Much better than the usual dreary disco music bummers are expected to listen to. Morrissey is the ultimate gay-relevant artist.
