Well it was a great set played by Alain Whyte - including several Smiths' songs- and after the show backstage he told me that the NME actually misquoted him back in the day when it wrote that Alain said "I wasn't a big fan of the Smiths". What he ACTUALLY said was that he was a HUGE fan - and was blown away by "William It Was Really Nothing" on Top of the Pops and loved the Smiths- but wasn't a massive enough fan that had every single B-Side and everything else. So they left all that out and only kept the negative part. Here are the pix I took: Alain-Whyte-Knitting-Factory-3.16.04 photo gallery My camera was 2 hours old - I just bought it tonight- so when I was backstage getting a picture with Alain I accidentaly had the "video" selected so here is the "accidental video" of us smiling waiting for the camera flash that never came (link to QuickTime movie, alternate link). Alain is saying "Better hide the cig!" I am on the left, Alain middle (obviously), and "Sweet and Tender Hooligan" Jose Maldonado is on the right. --- Update: 03/17 19:37 GMT: An anonymous person sends the setlist: 1. suedehead 2. baby i'm strange 3. stuck 4. crushed 5. were you ever in my life 6. that joke isn't funny anymore/what difference does it make 7. black dog day 8. dream a wish away 9. i miss you 10. face value 11. there is a light that never goes out 12. playing for you 13. everyday is like sunday/i know it's over 14. baby come back 15. hard times 16. this Charming man --- Update: 03/18 05:58 GMT: Desperately Kind writes: I've got a review of the Alain Whyte show in the live reviews section of my music site, Desperately Kind. Playing Gretsch Guitars with Cowboy Shirts is too much overkill...like a striped shirt with striped pants, and/or a striped tie. And...I live in Texas, and rednecks ain't all they're cracked up to be. It's kinda hard to swallow that lump when I see my heroes tip their hat to that image in the first place. To each his own, sure...but still...(gulp). I hope Alain isn't driving that Gretsch around in a Ford F150 while wearing a cell phone holster like the assholes here in Austin. All that's missing on that Gretsch is a Dale Earnhart "3" sticker. I know I'm laying it on thick now, but for some reason I feel like I have to say something due to the large number of years I've been seeing this particular fashion statement. I have 2 ways to go: this way or the Adam Ant cap gun way. Since we're all grown up and dress serious now in rock & roll, I'll go the cell phone holster way.

no-one will ever match Johnny Marr's astonishing creativity, particularly his 1986-87 peak. not Boz nor Alain nor any other pop song composer on planet earth.
But Boz and Alain have provided some fantastic pieces of music over the years admittedly mixed in with some less good stuff. but after 7 years, Moz will have picked their strongest musical compositions and his own sharpest lyrics so, hopefully, we're in for an absolute treat, and that's thanks to Morrissey, Boz and Alain.
