  • I felt that Morrissey was a bit uptight though, as if the interviewer failed to win his confidence.

And although I find Tillmans' pictures absolutely lovely, the questions sounded deadpan so they led to the same answers every Morrissey fan knows by heart. Hopefully, there was no sexuality mentioned !

Why wasn't there any questions about the deep reason why he chose Jerry Finn for instance ? Green Day, Blink 182 ! They're from another galaxy and some college band bashing was expected from Mr Morose !

Anyway, Thank you again for the transcription, I live like a monk and never got the chance to run to the store ;-)

    Sweet F.A.
    • RW,

Jerry Finn produced the 1997 Smoking Popes album Destination Failure, which Morrissey was quite taken with. In fact, that led to his asking them to open for him on the Maladjusted tour.

I find it interesting that You Are the Quarry has already been described by Alain as partially akin to Your Arsenal. Much as Mick Ronson was associated with Morrissey's past favorites, Jerry Finn guided one of his more "contemporary" faves.

I have the Alkaline Trio's From Here to Infirmary album, another project Finn mixed. The crystalline, crisp sound is the antithesis of the staid, slightly murky mix Steve Lillywhite gave us on Maladjusted. Given all the flack that album received, perhaps Morrissey was looking for something more immediate.

      Cheers,

      Jamie

that was a good one. I love hearing Morrissey express his love of pop music and the simple beauty of a singing voice.

  • not a very interesting interview, i think. And Moz seems to have lost his irony, or maybe it just was with this interviewer. yes, probably. The photos altough are very nice...

Checked out the usual venues today and couldn't find a copy of the above magazine - expense and time has been saved with this transcript.

I know Mr. Morrissey likes to be recherche, but this was pushing the boat out when it comes to obscurity - vague arty magazine NOT sold in the usual retail outlets. It's very well being elitist, but this is hellish for fanz who could'nt get a copy of this 'all gone' mag.

  • Morrissey continues to impress me considerably. I have been a huge fan since age 12. I am age 30 now. Morrissey is very intelligent, sensitive, creative, and clever. Most of all, he is a man of great integrity.

    Disappointed. Very much so.

  • The point is Craig Kilborn had a clip about Christina and others over-singing tonight on the Grammy Awards. But Moz predicted it. He predicted it!

JAMES: There are technically good people - the Christina Aguileras - but they oversing.
MORRISSEY: They make a meal of every note - they chew it to pieces. That's not singing.

  • As dull as this interview was, a boring Morrissey interview is better than none at all. I'd really like to see his opinion on some of the newer bands. I've heard enough about David Bowie and Lou Reed..etc. It would be interesting to see what he thinks of bands like Radiohead, Travis, Coldplay, or even the newer band Ours. Their first album was produced by Steve Lillywhite, and Boz played guitar on quite a few tracks. They are incredible, and I strongly suggest those who are unfamiliar to look into them. Unfortunately, Morrissey seems much too stubborn to give much notice to some of the new great bands out there these days. He would most likely slag all of them off.

A transcription at "Recycled" Papers? How ironic.

The interview seems mainly to consist of recycled old interviews. Nothing new to be found. So many questions could have been asked... and this is what we get?

All that was missing were a few rants against the british legal system and the royals. Oh well, better luck next time.

  • What's most surprising is the combination of interviewer and interviewee--James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy are the two halves of DFA, the production team behind bands like The Rapture, Radio 4 and other dance-rock hybrids--an odd choice to interview Morrissey, and I was certain some of his former disdainful comments about dance music would come to the fore...might have provided this lifeless interview with a bit of spark. Nice pics, though.

  • Last night I began reading The Importance of Being Earnest in preparation for a lecture I was helping out in. The portion that made me think of this Morrissey interview was found at the very beginning. When Algernon is playing piano then tells Lane that he is not a technical pianist but that he plays with ‘wonderful expression.’ It seems as if our crooner has borrowed this saying and applied it to his voice. Oh well, maybe it’s just me, but it made me smile.
