Update: 02/06 18:19 GMT: as noted by an anonymous person in the comments, a note on the Sanctuary Records site, a possible title change?:

NEW Morrissey album, "For Your Quarry", in stores 5.18.04!
---
Stefan Krix writes:

Just got in the news, according to a source from the London office of Sanctuary, that the new album will not be released before June and that that there is no fixed first single yet.

Despite the previous information of an April release this information does make sense by taking into account, that Producer Jerry Finn was quoted that 'the record will not be out before May or so' and that Boz Boorer told about additional 4-6 weeks in the studio to continue recording earlier this year.

No bigger retailer (in fact no-one but CDWow) - Internet-based or in the real world - does take pre-orders for the album or lists the album yet. So it seems to me that we have to wait a bit longer.

I do think that they will just wait until all tracks are finished before choosing a single. To me, the rumoured "The First Of The Gang To Die" was not a logical choice, neither were any of the 2002 revealed tracks.

After a 7-year-break you wouldn't start with something that the hard-core fans know by heart for two years, would you?

I work for BMG (Distributor of Sanctuary Records)and have access to their release database. There is NO information in the system yet. There's only an entry for a CD single and the title reads "T.B.A"! Only a catalog number has been assigned: SANXD261. Working in this industry allows me to say releases are pushed back on a daily basis. So why don't we all chill and let the man be? The album will be ready whenever he is happy with it. C'mon guys, stop creating a big fuss! We've waited over 6 years for a new Moz album, what's a few more weeks?

I think that considering Morrissey has had nearly a decade to come up with some great songs--this is indeed bad news, particularly that they have gone back to re-record and don't have a single in mind. I'd like to be optimistic but my fear sensors are going off.

Radio is so horrendous today I just can't see a Morrissey single sandwiched between Nally and Ja Ruleon anybody's crappy playlist.

    • I think you're allowing your fear sensors to go off for the wrong reasons, Bob. First of all, single in mind or no, it certainly will NOT be played on any format that Nelly or Ja Rule is on. And it never would have been: "Alma Matters" was played almost nowhere. "Dagenham Dave" and "The Boy Racer" weren't even released in the US as singles. And if you're in Europe or elsewhere in the world, chances are slim that Morrissey is "radio material" in 2004.

If I recall Finn's comments (and the others in general, Boz included), the intention was to FINISH the album, not re-record it. In the past, Morrissey has recorded albums very quickly (around two or three months); the results have been amazing or spotty depending on the fan you ask. Given that most major albums are recorded in a half year or more, this is still on minimal time frame. Chances are, they are playing around with the mix more than recording additional tracks / re-recording new ones.

It sounds like this Guardian interview finds Morrissey feeling as if his reputation is on the line with the album; it's only natural for him to spend the next few months making it perfect. Let him do his best and don't you worry. :)

On a side note, if Morrissey is recording approximately 25-30 songs, it seems as if there is going to be a second album in short order. He has never let material go to waste, especially after broadcasting the titles. Since multiple singles aren't a very financially feasible option anymore, I suspect we'll be seeing a second album or EP within a year.

Or he may never release another thing. Who knows??

      Cheers,

      Jamie

  • I don't think there is a set release date for a single or the Lp right now. I don't think it's complete. Most records are advertised at least 3 months in advance. When visiting the Sanctuary site, they have no other news other than a date, no pic of the album cover or any other details. This leads me to believe that they are speculating that it will be finished real soon and that's their hopeful date. And a single? If the record is to come out in 3 months from now, how come the single is still "TBA"? Singles are usually out at least a month or two before the LP to create hype and test the market, so with no name for a single and no advertising for these releases, I'm thinking that neither are done and we are all going to wait until June at the least. What do you think?

  • I think the use of the word "postponed" verges on the brink of Kent Brockman style idiocy!

At no stage have Sanctuary given a finite release date, and to be honest why would they when the product isn't finished. Boz and Jerry Finn have publicly stated that the album is being finished off in LA.

After that Sanctuary will need to sort out cover art, schedule a single (don't know if they'll bother with a video!?) and work on getting Morrissey on the cover of as many glossies as possible.

Christ, it should be remembered that they only entered the studio in early October! Everyone has pointed the finger at Lillywhite's production and rushed recording for the reason behind Southpaw and Maladjusted's lack of appeal. Now when they spend time getting the production right, everyone is up in arms with an "oh my gawd" reaction...

Also remember that Vauxhall was originally slated for late 1993 release and it was set back by four or five months in order to sort out mixing etc. At this stage, I'm not sure it's even fair to say that "Quarry" is even delayed.

It sounds like Morrissey is going to get plenty of press between now and May/June/whenever. Surely this will give us something to whet out appetites.

  • the important thing is there is something to wait for and the more we wait the more we want, when the wait is over we will exitedly wait for tour news and wait for media appearances and when every word and chord is etched into our fragile brains then we will ask how long will we have to wait for more
