Moz garnered a brief mention in VH1's "I Love the 80's". There was a brief flash of His Mozness during the intro to "I Love 1988" and VH1 inexplicably decided to shoehorn Morrissey, The Cure, Depeche Mode and Erasure into this episode. A five-second sample of "Suedehead" was played accompanied by one or two images of Moz. Then, unfortunately, it was time for the assembled peanut gallery of idiots and non-entities to comment. Some blond idiot (from musical shite group Berlin, I believe) said she found Morrissey to be "whiney". Sure, "Take My Breath Away" from the Top Gun soundtrack was pure musical excrement, but not "whiney". Enter various other commentators speculating baselessly on the source of Moz's presumed "depression". All in all, it was depressingly stupid. Oh, sorry, is that too whiney?

I was watching VH1 when the special," I love the 80s" came on. Morrissey and the Smiths were featured on the segment of 1988. Instead of praising Morrissey for providing the kids with an alternative to sappy 80s pop, the guest claimed that Morrissey was "too whiney." They said that Morrissey gets paid to sing about how much his life sucks. They also made fun of Robert Smith. One guy was like, "yeah I wear my hair over my eyes because the world is too painfull to look at." I was so disgusted and I am thinking of boycotting VH1. What tasteless uninformed bastards!

Yeah, it was a bit shallow of the complainers. Although Michael Ian Black had a great comment about the 'retro hippies' in 1988, something to the effect of: "I could have done the hippie thing and gotten all kinds of girls but instead I was listening to Morrissey, what was I thinking?"
I liked the sarcasm in his comment, like there was no way in hell he'd give up Moz for the hippie thing.
I do like the term 'Goth Starter Kit' for the Cure. But the rest, well - I don't think the detractors have a clue.

  • What's wrong with Berlin?'Take my breath away' is one of the best power ballads ever written, and those things were big around that time.

Power ballad! thats the name for a romantic song with 5th position chords. if you compare "Take my breath away" with "Last night I dreamed that somebody loved me", the Berlin songs then sounds pointless.

Besides, being great at that time dosent mean that is a great song. Main stream always has bad taste... Take for instance NOW a days.

I'm am not sure about the incest part, but he's an asshole anyway.

I don't think he even knows who Morrissey is. He just wanted to sound cool, but instead he sounded like a jackass.

  • I was deciding to Boycott VH1 because of what they said bout Mozzie boy and his arch nemisis Robert Smith. I wrote the little commantry on the top!!Seriously and to put Depech Mode and Erasure with The Cure n Mozz is just not right-its not Kosher n its not smart. Im also mad that they didnt bother to talk bout the Smiths at all. Wat losers. I was watching 1983 no mention of The Smiths. How lame. Vh1 needs music education!
