Playlouder's Paula Peabody, in response to the NME article naming The Smiths as the most influential artist ever, has written a piece naming The Smiths as "the single WORST fucking thing that ever happened to British pop music." According to the article, the existence of The Smiths resulted in "the dull, grey, self-pitying arse-dribble of indie, of Travis, Starsailor, Turin Brakes, The Doves, Badly Drawn Boy blah blah blah bleeeeeeurgh, Whining, stinking, slimy, irritating, boring, tiny-mouse-cocked student fucking cunt music."

  • I'm not even going to dignify such vile language by reading that article. Anyone who uses such words in an article can't be taken seriously. This is such an obvious attempt to upset and annoy people.
I could say so many f-words and s-words now but I'm not even going to sink to this woman's level.
I'm just going to say that the Smiths have proven their worth. They ARE the most important British band of the last 20 years and they've stood the test of time.
I think it's fine if somebody has a different opinion about the Smiths than I do, but there's a way to express it and using such language certainly is NOT the way.

  • I've never heard of this band. It's clear to see that they are nothing but a bunch of no-hopers who will never reach the popularity and fame of Morrissey and The Smiths and so in a jealous rage they lash out. It's pathetic.

oh, she sure has a point: she accurately described turin brakes and those other 'duller than thou' groups as 'whining', 'bland' and ..was it 'arse-dribbling'?

...and it's a common and convenient mistake to put smiths/mozboy under the same label... and that's her crime - how dare she blame smiths for all those mediocre tossers in travis et al?

don't forget that smiths were sexy; handsome; zesty; slappy in the facy etc, and so are their fans (i've never actually met a bland, miserable weight-watching fan,,, then again, i've never been to america, is that where they all reside?)

I say a gang of us go round to her house on a hot summer afternoon when she is in her back garden exposing her peabody to carcinogenic UV rays, then lob a nest of angry wasps over the fence and witness the dance of panic. Hehehehe, that'll give her something to be bitter about.

  • The clash, most important british band? Now this is surely laughable. Though the music of The CLash is sometimes pleasing, their music doesn't climb at the same level of The Smiths. Poor, poor child, with no sense of musical taste.

  • The 'Paula Peabody' article is a hoax, it was written by NME journalist and Morrissey-hater Steven Wells. If you go to the discussion-board, I've written my theory on why this is the case, it's under the heading 'Paula Peabody is a man'. Hope this is of some help to you all.
    Love to everyone.

  • How did Steven Wells aka Paula Peabody ever become a music critic, parts of that article contain comments he's written before detailing his wish for Morrissey's head. He can't even think of something new to say, dumb f##k! I can take criticism of the Moz, like everyone he is not beyond it, but from a guy who took a whole page out in his beloved NME (at his own expense)to tell the world the merits of the band Napalm death I draw the line........this is why Moz must return as I'm tired of those flying bullets, the critics feed on.

  • Well if you notice most Napham Death fans are hairy fat tyre fitters from Birmingham who will only have sex in an internet chatroom. This Pishbody person should also remember that her beloved N.D pedel songs about flustration and depression and are an influence to many a thick student who doesnt have a clue about music. The Smiths may have influenced rubbish like Travis,Coldplay,BDB etc but werent Elo influenced by the Beatles and The Black Crowes by the Stones,
also would you rubbish the contribution of The Velvet Underground,Iggy Pop etc just because the dire Strokes are influenced by them. You can't blame a band for dodgy bands who have taken influence from them. Morrissey was the finest songwriter from 84-94 and nobody will alter my view.

  • Well,it's obvious that Ms.Peabody has enormous gaps in her emotional and spiritual awareness. We must,of course,be on guard against any angry responses towards her.Instead,we must substitute a more appropriate emotion. That, naturally, would be one of infinite pity.,,

  • I haven't been arsed to write for months. This site is ostensibly a huge US based arse lick to a fallen hero. But wait.. The Smiths. Up there with the Beatles, the Pistols, Joy Division, etc etc as a band who mean something in the long run?
Paula Peabody misses the point, because he [or she] cannot be bothered to unravel the difference between The Smiths and Morrissey. Morrissey was only one half of the deal and has never existed since the departure of Mr Marr. McCartney gave us the best single song ever by a country mile, Hey Jude, whilst in the Beatles - Mozzer wrote the lyrics for the second, How Soon is Now, whilst in the Smiths. Respectively, both later gave us the Frog Song and Dagenham Dave. I think Mozzer may be the worst thing to happen to British music - he, but moreso YOU, created an unsustainable legend. A man who never really deep deep down matched your post-smiths expectations,

Fuck Starsailor. And Travis. And ultimately Moz. find something new. The man is old and should be forgotten. Like Jonny Rotten and Lennon. Adore something new and fresh. Revitalise you fools.

Listen to the Smiths - the 2nd best band the world has ever seem, but don't be frightened by the fact that you were in nappies [diapers in the USA] when it all happened. Embrace the future. Fuck, the next Prodigy LP will kill allcomers.

  • Helen,

I admire you. You sat at your keyboard wound up by my succint, yet cystally accurate comments. I liked that. When I was at school and the Queen is Dead came out I used to say such brilliantly circus like comments as, and I quote:

"Oh by the way The Smiths and Morrissey have always pissed on The Beatles!"

Because I devoured Moz interviews, I wanted to be as quotable. And your comment is genius! How do you arrive at the conclusion that the Smiths "pissed" on the Beatles? You are as ageist as you make me out to be? You view the Beatles as 'my folks' music. You do not see the lineage, the evolution. The Smiths did not piss on the Beatles, just as the Jam did not piss on the Smiths. There has been a great British lineage [the USA is simply a footnote save Nirvana and the Beach Boys. And Paul Simon maybe]. There is a place for the Smiths at the highest table. But they must share.

Yet your ignorance, and sincere naivety is touching.

You wouldn't know the Strokes if they hit you in the face and I really must applaud that.

The Smiths are are the most important band Peabody has ever probably lived through. Moz is beyond a fat bloated pantomime. Save Viva Hate and V & I.

The Smiths were important because they demanded it. Moz seems to bleed for past glories.

Wake up, build a new website to a band you discovered in a small bar. Leave Moz to buy Gucci candles and remember the good times like you remember your first girlfriend. You get over her I hope? Oh you must...

So Paula - go home!
