I was going to see best of Slamdance at the Egyptian to see "Louder than Bombs," when I happened to stop by a newsstand. To my surprise, I flipped through Q Magazine Best 100 Rock Pictures and found a earnestly whimsical photo of Morrissey paying homage to James Dean circa Griffith Observatory. I can't quite remember what number it was or who the photographer was, but the photo placed around the 50's. I was elated to see that Morrissey was payed respect for his wounderful Persona Pictures that has delighted us all.

  • there's a morrissey pic at number 67. it was taken by kevin cummins at jones beach, long island in august 1991. it says:

taking photos for morrissey's tour brouchure, kevin cummins was given full access to the singer's 1991 world tour. "american fans were so desperate to see morrissey play, and they virtually all turn up with presents and flowers, which would often end up onstage. to morrissey's right, you can see a huge bubble-wrapped picture, with a huge bow on it, which was someone's drawing of morissey that they'd decided to give him. he'd often lie onstage with his legs in the air. i'd taken a photo the previous night, from the front, with his boots peeking up over the monitor, so i thought i'd get one from the side of the stage. he duly obliged and lay around during seveal songs. it isn't posed at all. when i'm out front, he's more conscious of me, but when i'm at the side, he doesn't know where i am, plus he's so short-sighted, so he drifts off into his own world. great rock 'n' roll photos aren't neccessarily taken in studios; they're about live performance. live photography is a much undervalued art. pr's want you to photograph the first two or three numbers only, so it's very hard to get a good live photo, but this shot shows what you can get if you have the access. it's halfway through the show, when morrissey is getting into it. it captures the essence of morrissey, and his fans, and what a live morrissey show is. it's christ-like in it's own way. people say it's an iconic picture of him, and i believe them."

the picture is b+w shot of mozzer draped over the monitor thingy in that way that he does. there are flowers (and the mentioned picture) on the stage all around him. his eyes are closed and he looks quite, quite gorgeous.

the second picture, the one that was mentioned in the story, is at number 28. it was taken by andy earl, at griffiths observatory, l.a., spring 1995. it says:

by 1995, morrissey was relocating to america, and q went out to meet him on his new turf. earl: "morrissey always had a bit of a james dean fixation. the griffiths observatory is the rebel without a cause reference, plus i wanted to shoot him outside, using light and the elements. given he was trying to settle into america, he was reluctant to be too associated with james dean. he didn't want it to be all too obvious. but when you saw the polaroids i took beforehand, you could see that it wasn't playing up to that whole side of things, it's more of a nod and a wink to it." earl positioned morrissey by the wall, and used a panoramic camera. "the shot is so visual, with the dome and the lettering. it's got a lovely sense of scale to it, and place, but i also love the graffiti on the wall, and that someone's written 'soul' on the bin that he's sitting above." the shoot was scheduled for midday, but by the time morrissey arrived, the sun had gone in and cloud took over. earl compensated with a flash and got he result he wanted. "i think he look really cool, quite james dean in the way he's lounging. and because he's looking away from the camera, he's more pensive than you'd usually see him. his arms are stretched out like a cross, too. it's quite statuesque. even though it's set up, it doesn't look that way. it has a casualness to it. morrissey loved the shots. back in london, he came into the q offices to have a look, and he said, it's really rather beautiful, isn't it?"

    i have no life... (sigh)

  • i saw this last night. i did like the one with him lying on the monitor, looking very peaceful. maybe the Kevin Cummins book isn't so evil after all....

...not that i'm going to buy the collectors edition, but.....

otherwise, i really didnt find most of the pics they chose to be that exciting. maybe i just don't have an eye for it.

    I scare dead people.
  • I saw the magazine last week. Moz has a beautiful picture. I was really shocked to see him in there. It seems that a lot of journalists no longer take an intrest in Morrissey. I don't think anyone should steal the magazine, but fans should find a way to get a hold of that picture! :)
