A lot of people saw this premiere, thanks to all of those who sent in the details.

nyxstar* writes: Just letting you know that on Wednesday (January 23, 2002) a new show on the Fox Network premiered here in the states. It's called 'That 80's Show' and take place in San Diego in the early 80's. The background music for one of the scenes that took place in a record store was The Smiths' "What Difference Does It Make?" I thought that it was strange that THAT particular song was chosen as opposed to some other more popular Smiths songs like "How Soon is Now", which is constantly being played on 80's stations everywhere. Anyways, that's my little contribution to Smiths news. The show is a bit lame, but that particular episode was worth watching.

The wait was worth the while when not but five minutes into the show The Smiths where heard in the background. The scene opens with the What Difference Does it Make? blaring in a record shop and continues to play through out the duration of the scene in almost its entirity... Also the folks over at KCET, (Moz Angeles PBS) still can't get enough of The Smiths. "Hand in Glove", "Ocsillate Wildly", "There is a Light that Never Goes Out" and "Some Girls are Bigger than Others" have all been heard playing in the background of their programming descriptions. I guess KCET is trying to prove that PBS isn't as stuffy as many believe.

When they showed the main character, (a 22yr old with a degree in philosophy who works in a record store in San Diego) in the first record store scene, they were playing "What Difference Does It Make?" in the background. They played almost the entire song until the 22 yr. old (whose name I failed to catch) said that he was going to play a Black Flag tape.

  • The show does take place in San Diego in the early 80's. 1984 to be precise. "How Soon Is Now?" was not released until 1985 on the "Meat Is Murder" gem of an album. If the producers of the show researched their soundtrack, that should be the reason "How Soon Is Now?" did not get played on the premiere. Besides, I'm sure we're all content with such a wise choice of a song, right?

We are the change that we seek.
  • Hell,
I heard that wonderful song playing in the background and I stopped paying attention to what was happening on the television, I WAS TOO BUSY SINGING ALONG!

Did anyone actually LIKE the show though? I hope it get's better, cause the premier wasn't so great.

And the songs we sing, they're not supposed to mean a thing...
  • The show is a little on the bland side. However, I had a feeling that they were going to play The Smiths on the show, so I watched it and was excited to hear them. I always feel a sneaky sense of victory when I hear his music broadcast to large, unsuspecting audiences.

  • Didn't anyone notice that this scene from the first episode ripped off the great Jack Black scene in the even greater HIGH FIDELITY movie? Remember when Black's character (who also works at a used record store) tells the middle-aged father who requests I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU for his daughter to go to the mall!!!

  • I've heard the same thing during their little "up next" promos between shows. Somebody who works for KCET must be a big fan.

  • I wonder if the show will touch the big Mod Revival and Power Pop movement that was happening in San Diego in the early 80s.
