Stephen J writes:

Stuart Adamson, the frontman of Scottish rock band Big Country has been found hanged in a hotel room in Honolulu.

In 1999 Adamson cited Morrissey as one of two lyricists he truly admired together with Leonard Cohen.

Lyrics in some of the songs on Big Country's final album Driving to Damascus almost seem to foretell the tragedy of Adamson's final desperate days.

Stuart Adamson RIP

Jason L. also writes:

While this is not really Smiths related, Stuart Adamson, the lead singer of Big Country, was found dead yesterday. (December 17th, I believe). He had been missing from his Nashville home for over a month and was found hanging in a hotel room in Hawaii. I am sure that some fans of this site may also be Big Country fans. I was. Goodbye to a great musician who helped pave the road in the 80's. We'll miss you!

  • I had the pleasure of seeing Big County back in 1984; I remember the euphoria from the audience's response, which lasted during their entire performance, right to the very last song...which was "In A Big County"...and, they came out and did it as an encore, too. The Warfield Auditorium was blazing with enthusiasm!

  • Yes, he will be sadly missed by the "proper" fans of music. Although it means little to people out there who listen to Robbie Williams and Britney Spears, there is no denying what a great talent he was - he wrote great lyrics and music. It's true about the Driving To Damascus album; the lyrics are very dark, even more so now. It's hard to believe the suicide as Morrissey has also wrote some very dark lyrics in his time e.g. Asleep from over 15 years ago.
Rest In Peace Stuart Adamson - A great musician, one of a few.

  • it was the lead singer of A-HA...

    Well...I didn't mean to!

I was never a proper fan, I suppose, but it's sad to hear about anyone dying, especially like that.

Deepest Sympathy goes out to his family, friends, and fans.

  • and how sad have we've been

    I let you know

Big Country was big in the time The Smiths were
    dominating in the UK.
Big Country had a few great songs/hitsingles
in their first years ,after that they somehow
    lost touch, how, I dunno.

    Godspeed to you, Stuart Adamson

[btw, please don't post unrespectfull post about
him and his band, he doesn't deserve that]

  • I heard this news last week and did'nt know what to think.Big Country was a hugely popular band in their day, and even recently they were still getting plenty of work. I cant understand why someone would feel the need to end their own life, but maybe that's the point- it was issues in his private life, and i think it shows that stars have the same problems that the average people do. Anyway, i have many Big Country songs on my computer, including the king biscuit flower hour, which for the last track has a version of in a big country done in Glasgow, Scotland on new year's eve right before the new year.Whoever would like can download it from my computer here: ftp://65.14.79.158
i'll leave it on until new years
