A little tidbit from Momus, who has been mentioned on the site before and deservedly so, who contributed this to an on-line discussion board thread on El Moz:

"I just met Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys at the ICA in London and he said Morrissey has a new album all ready to be released, but that no label will touch it because he's asking too much money."

  • Why not doing an automatic news maker, it is always the same thing.

Even the marketplace is a mess right now...

  • It's a lie. One more rumour for the pile this year!

And the songs we sing, they're not supposed to mean a thing...

  • McCartney and Jagger recent commercial solo flops probably won't help Moz as far as the $ thing goes, but here's an interesting reminder: Jagger/ McCartney, both generic household names, are selling poorly, whereas Dylan, who has a strong, focused, dedicated fanbase has sold almost half a million copies of his latest ("Love and Theft"). Leonard Cohen's new album, currently #69 at the Amazon sales rank, also seems to be quite successful (specially if one takes into account that Cohen's a 67 years old canadian pop artist whose previous studio album was released nine years ago).
    There is hope, my friends.

  • Neil Tennant and Momus are two of the nicest guys in the world, so I doubt they're fibbing.

  • "asking too much money." That part sounds believable.

  • This actually gives me a glimmer of hope, more than any other faux news item regarding a new Morrissey record. Pop maven that Neil Tennant is I'm sure he knows his industry gossip, and in the Pet Shop Boys bio "Actually" it's mentioned that Moz was invited to one of their record release parties...the only x-factor here is Momus, not exactly the most trustworthy of commentators--not to mention owner of shockingly ugly jumpers. Though I seem to recall Momus speaking of Moz fondly in the past.

  • Hopefully, he will work on the new album with Moz. Johnny Marr is on most of the new Pet Shop Boys album due for release in a few months. It seems like when they work together they make the most beautiful music. I mean, it's the PSB and The Smiths. Together they are brilliant!

  • Let's see here...if I ask for $5 million, record corp. is going to buy because my fan base is limited (although loyal) and the record company won't be able to cover recording costs + my flat fee. If I go at $1M, then they might go for it, plus I could stick a clause in there for any unit sales over and above an agreed upon threshold...

    So, $1M vs. $0.......

PS...Tennant & Lowe are awesome...Johnny is incredible on "My october symphony"

  • Surely all these years in the business haven't left Morrissey skint. He should release an album anyway and be thankful for the money he gets! He's lucky to get any at this stage of his career,
To say the least im truely disappointed!

  • It's hard to escape the conclusion that if this is true(and we've all heard Moz has an album) that he's a shit. If he cared about his fans he could release a record. I have no business acumen at all. If I were a millionaire living in Clark Gable's old place (or whatever it is)I wouldnt need any. I'd be rich.
How can a person care so much about money? I dunno it's weird but rich people do seem too.
Why do they want more than they can ever spend????????totally bizarre.
