As crazy as this may sound, Belle and Sebastian not only played "The Boy With A Thorn In His Side" at their Saturday night concert (9/8/01 @ The Warfield, San Francisco), but I was fortunate enough to be picked out of the crowd to join the band on stage and help Stuart Murdoch with the words and singing. It was a definite highlight of my life, so if there's anyone out there who attended the show and made (or know of) a bootleg, i would give really love to get a copy! thanks!

...During the audience request period they couldnt really decide on anything so the guitar player (name escapes me) decided to go with 'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side.' Unfortunately, Stuart Murdoch had no idea what the lyrics were so they pulled up one lucky fan to whisper the lyrics into his ear during the song. The band played the song alright but things broke down when Stuart started butchering the song because he couldnt keep up with the fan, who ended up singing all by himself (and not badly at all, I must say).

Another funny instance occurred during the end of the show when Isobel Campbell was talking to the audience. She was saying something like 'its weird because I feel like such a Scot but (gesturing to the crowd) you like Morrissey? Really?' I thought it was pretty hilarious because you'd figure at least half the audience there were huge Smiths/Moz fans, but anyway... that's about it. awesome show with a little something extra for the Moz fanatics.

  • I did enjoy the performance too. I was in total shock when the whole thing happened. My heart was pounding. A Smiths cover, a momus reference, and dancing in the balcony aisles .. my night was complete.

  • Although I was grateful to have gotten tickets for the second show on Sunday night, I regretted not getting them for Saturday night. I was not surprised to read the review in our local San Francisco paper Monday morning; I figured it would perhaps be the better of the 2 shows. Brian was mentioned as giving a good rendition of "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side". Alas, having read on their website, B&S also do a great version of "Reel Around The Fountain", I was dismayed that Sunday night's show did not have a Smiths song. In fact, many of the songs I really wanted to hear were done on Saturday and not Sunday. We did get treated to the song "If You're Going To San Francisco (Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)" as Sarah threw bouquets of flowers into the audience. They also did a tongue-in-cheek version of Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" - where Isobel disappeared for a minute only to re-appear with something "bulging" beneath her Bob Dylan dress. As Stuart sang, "but the kid is not my son" she bounced around rubbing her protruding belly! A good laugh, indeed.

I know I was extremely lucky to have seen them as both shows were sold-out. And it would've been nice to see them do Sly's "Family Affair" - I grew up hearing that song on the radio! And, sorry I did not "catch your act", Brian!

P.S. I would also like to get a hold of a bootleg recording of Saturday's show!!!

  • I was the person who called out the request for "The Boy with the Thorn in his Side". Stuart asked for requests for any non-B&S song. Stevie heard me, but thought I was requesting "arab strap" and he commented that it was a B&S song. Stuart corrected him and said "that is a Smiths song". All the audience heard was the "Smiths" and they went wild. Stuart explained to the crowd that he wasn't asking if we wanted a Smiths song, but that he was pointing out to Stevie that we requested a smiths song. The crowed was way too excited so they were kinda stuck doing the song. Woo hoo!
Brian, you did a great job up there. I made it on stage a couple days before at the 2nd LA show to sing "Take me out to the Ball game". I know how exciting and exhilarating it was!

  • You guys are so nice! Never have i seen such goodwill between Moz fans - sniff sniff ;) I really appreciate your compliments... like everybody here, i grew up worshiping The Smiths. Their music helped to shape who i am, so it was really wonderful to be able to pay them tribute in my own little way!

Thanks tina... after all, you're responsible for all of this! I saw you do your thing at the LA show and you were excellent! Me and my friends were just glowing when you were up there. Right on! Maybe we can sing a duet of "Lazy Line Painter Jane" at the next Moz show (hehe).
