according to the Grant Lee Phillips (former nucleus of Grant Lee Buffalo) website b-board, Grant did a musical impression of Moz at his recent gig in Boulder, CO. Going by the impromptu title of "No Dancing, No Smoking" it apparently featured Grant doing his best take on Moz reviewing the clubs policies for the evening. Grant is a bit of an impressionist: I've heard him do dead ringers for Eddie Vedder, Willie Nelson, Kasey Kasem and James Brown--all eerie close to the original. I wish I could have seen his take on Moz!

For those unfamiliar with Grant, or his old band, I'd encourage you to check them out, they're wonderful. Grant's new solo album "Mobilize" is a real stunner, and reminds me of early Morrissey solo work in it's production and programming, as well as evoking tones of Bowies best work. Check it out and rock on.

  • Talking about doing Morrissey impressions, I have been known to swing an imaginary bunch of gladioli and pretend I was on Top Of The Pops singing some sort of Smiths tune.

Me and my friend were at a wits end one night and decided to go and have a drink at this club near to where we live. It was, horror of horrors, karaoke night and was soooo boring. Then, as soon as I was about to suggest to my friend that we leave he said "I'll give you twenty quid to get up on that stage and do your Morrissey dance...". Well, I thought "Ooh, I could do with the twenty squid and... it is boring..." so I took one swig of my crappy watered down lager ran through the dance floor and climbed onto the stage where there was a solitary male singing something by Boyzone (A boyband that are quite big in the UK). I danced around him pretending to be Morrissey for ten seconds ignoring all the gasps from the dancefloor and bar areas... I thought I was the best Morrissey impressionist on the planet. And for 20 seconds, I think I was.

I then got pulled off the stage by a large bouncer who then kicked me out of the club through the back door.

I waited outside for my friend who came out 2 minutes later absolutely creasing it. It was hilarious. Well worth it and I recommend infiltrating karaoke nights with Morrissey impressions to anyone.

Oh, and i never got my £20.

  • I saw Grant Lee in Annapolis, MD last Saturday and he did the Moz impersonation at this show also. Since it got such a laugh, maybe he's recycling it. Between songs someone in the crowd yelled out, "No smoking, no dancing", referring to the club's policies. Grant Lee responded, "No smoking, no dancing? Is that a Morrissey b-side?" So he started strumming his acoustic, adopted a faux Moz voice and sang a bunch of lines to the song. It was hilarious.
