.::.: New Johnny Marr interview
Johnny Marr played with Neil Finn at the Witnness festival in Ireland. Included in the set was "There's a light that never goes out", described by fan Donal Flanagan as "pretty brilliant stuff". You can find an interview with Johnny Marr on the official Witnness festival website.

ps: as far as I'm concerned, if it's not Moz singing it it's just another cover.

I was getting a beer and waiting for the Waterboys to come on at a recent music festival called 'Witnness' outside Dublin. As I queued I heard the 'worthy but dull' sounds of Neil Finn wafting accross the festival grounds.

Suddenly out of no-where he introduces a guest guitarist and who was it? ...none other than our own Johnny Marr. He plays for a while when suddenly he launches into 'There is a Light...'

A huge section of the crowd cheered loudly (which surprised me, there must be a lot of closet Moz/Smiths fans out there) and started to sing along.

It was a great festival and this was definately one of the highlights of it for me....

I wonder though, are the Johnny's band the Healers still a going concern? It'd seem from the lukewarm reception they've gotten so far that they either are or should be. Is this possibly Johnny Marr's new career as a celebrity kareoke machine for Smiths songs?

If so, and Johnny's career goes into freefall, then we're only one short step away from....well, you all know what I mean so I won't speak it aloud.

Suffice it to say that the more desperate they both become...the more they'll realise that they need each other...

  • Hmm, I wouldn't go as far to say that if Morrissey isn't singing that it might as well be a cover...Johnny Marr did write the music afterall, and I would say thats pretty important.

She had the longest, blackest hair, prettiest brown eyes anywhere...
  • after all these years spent hiding in established bands and celebrity supergroups, Johnny Marr will finally know what it feels like to be standing alone and judged as an individual. I wonder how kindly the reviewers and chart positions will treat him...

  • I saw Neil Finn play here in Auckland at the St. James theatre a few months ago. They did "There is a light" at this gig too (and all of the Auckland shows, I think) As someone who has never seen Morrissey live, and was too young to get into The Smiths when they actually existed, it was an amazing performance ..... despite Neil's kiwi accent the song was amazing .... I was sitting on the edge of my seat with shivers running down my spine. Johnny also played a solo song too ... although it was a bit bluesy for my liking.

  • I'm as bit upset that Marr quit The Smiths but i wouldn't go off and criticize him he is one of the best damn guitarists in the buisness I don't blame Marr for leaving The Smiths put out alot of good music during their years so let's give the man his due.

True friends stab you in the front.
  • Marr answers questions from fans on his site. He even answers lame questions. He even answered my questions! He also graciously answers Morrissey-related questions, although he prefers to look toward the future.

I have Last Ride on a promo CD from some magazine, and it's pretty good. The Healers has been getting props from Oasis, among others. Johnny originally auditioned someone else for vocals, but the band wanted him to do it himself. He sounds passable, and the songwriting on the rest of the album is bound to be great.

I think Johnny Marr is doing fine without Morrissey. He's highly respected in the industry, and he's played with all his favorite artists.

I would love to see the Smiths back together as much as the next fan (I think), but that doesn't mean that everything else Marr does is worthless.

Maybe we'll be seeing Johnny Marr t-shirts again soon!

On an occasion of this kind it becomes more than a moral duty to speak one's mind. It becomes a pleasure. -O.W.
  • Marr was as much a player in the Smiths as Moz was. It isn't just another cover.

The reasoning would stand true that when Morrissey does a Smiths' tune that it too is just a cover since Marr is not playing guitar...

    And everything will flow....
  • While the Smiths are my favorite band and always will be, I do have to ask the question: What has Marr done lately that is brilliant? To call him the best guitarist is ridiculous. At one time, yes, he was brilliant. Now he is just milking it. I have not heard the new band yet so hopefully it sheds some light.
