Last Monday (2/7/01), Snake River Conspiracy released their cover of 'How Soon Is Now?' as a single in the UK through label Morpheus. An add appeared in this month's Mojo Magazine promoting the release, reproducing the dated "Better than the original" Morrissey quote. It entered the Official UK Top 100 on Sunday at number 83.

  • I'm sorry, but I cannot stand SRC's cover of 'How Soon Is Now?'!!! All of their music is horrible, but the fact that they covered what is really the only song that any non Smiths fan knows (and they are one in the line of too many, I might add)...it just bothers me. I shouldn't take such things so seriously...but how can I resist complaining about something like this? It is bad enough that they covered the song...but now it has to be released elsewhere...

  • This version is cringeworthy and tear - jerking. 83 is to me a flattering position for the poor vocals and awful guitars. However , the singer is rather attractive ....

  • Even though I love most every Moz and Smith song (Except "Tony The Pony", or whatever), the Smiths version of "How soon is Now?, truly has a special place in my heart. As mentioned in the earlier posting, it is a favorite and most commonly known song among those who are unfamiliar with the band. I do appreciate that the female singer has been a Moz fan, so I cannot blame her for the re-make even though I dislike the instrumental, almost be-bop style of the song. It reminds me of that remake "Killing me softly", which was ok too, but not Moz or Smith unique style's. What irritates the hell out of me is that comment Moz made about her remake being better. First of all, Moz didn't mean that comment. I know from books, answers from interviews, quick quotes as he passes someone, and the comments I personally heard him make in a few concerts I attended, Moz is far from a public speaker. Of course, his witty quotes and comments are very amusing and often Oscar Wilde-esque, so to speak. But in his shyness, he usually just says "thank you" or leaves you with a short answer that really doesn't answer your question. Bottom line, when he speaks, he either blurts out something controversial to many, or a witty quote, or he says something he doesn't really mean because he is timid and not knowing what to say, attempts to be friendly. At that time and moment, he wanted to make her feel good. That is all. Also, from knowing what I do about him, he may have been making a dig at the rest of the ex-smiths, who all sued him. To me "How Soon Is Now", reminds me of his emotional pain and his indifference to "normalsy" he has had throughout his life. In the song he demands to be loved despite who and what he stands for--it's very touching to me. Hearing that the remake is better is an insult to music history and everything Moz represents. One more thing, for what it's worth, I read that some of the reasons the Smiths version didn't hit the top of the charts here in U.S.A., is because Fly-by-nighters such as "Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Boy George, others, and insufficient publicity (of course!), made for bad timing. But, I will be forever suprised if the simple mainstream music, doesn't always keep Moz off the charts. He is to complex and different to appeal for the mass quantities of simple people who rule the world, and its music--sorry for being long-winded, Steve

  • I thought the remake wasn't as good as the original. One thing that really annoys me is that the only two good songs on their cd are remakes, and I liked Vulcan. I think most credit for that cd belongs to the person who wrote and redid the songs than the singer who doesn't even make any of the music, but yet on www.snakeriverconspiracy.com in an interview, they claim her as a female Trent Reznor...right! That statement would be true if she made all of the music herself.

On the other hand I will give credit. I like her voice, and she is a knock out.
