During the Belle and Sebastian show in Glasgow on June 15th, the band covered "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side." Midway through the set (as usual) Stevie Jackson asked the audience for song requests and this time an audience member requested the beloved Smiths. Stevie remarks "I don't know any Smiths songs but I know all the chords to one" and he starts into the guitar intro for "The Boy with a Thorn in His Side." After an energetic, if flawed, take on the song, Stuart Murdoch remarked that his girlfriend and Stevie's girlfriend are never going to forgive them "for murdering that song... for not knowing how to play that song." A great treat nonetheless for the Morrissey fans in the audience.

  • If they eventually decide to grace us with their bad selves this side of the pond...I do hope Stuart and the gang choose to run through this a few times in soundcheck to polish it up and do the song proper justice!

  • I'm going to see Belle and Sebastian in Preston... on my birthday (27 june).

It would be the best present I could get to hear them cover 'The Boy...'. If anyone reads this who knows the band, let them know how much we want to hear this!!!

  • Having ben a very big fan of Belle and Sebastian since the beginning, I think that they are now wearing out their welcome. Their albums have become painfully bland with very little creativity. I guess a Smiths song is the best thing they have played in years. Maybe their next album will be all Smiths covers.

  • i was at that gig, and their cover was brilliant. stuart was a bit reluctant at the start, but for an impromptu cover, they did extremely well. also, the two glasgow gigs were 2 of the best gigs i've ever been to. i don't really understand what all the slagging is about, there are very few active bands who are better than belle and sebastian. also, the new stuff sounds brilliant...

If anyone can still find it, there is a 45 single that was put out around the time of Tigermilk that was for a song called "Tears For The Tissue". It was an amazing song but the best part is that the b-side was a cover of the Smiths "Half A Person". I have seen the single fetching around $375 in some places. Good Luck finding it now.

  • Well being pretty new to the band, a little over 6 months now. I have grown to love B&S, they're musical abilities are superb. When I fouund out that they did a Smiths cover I went wild, hopefully they can tour the states sometime this year promoting their new album.
