    Great interview, quite funny...

    Songs played:
The World is Full of Crashing Bores
    Irish Blood, English Heart
    I Like You

The last was particularly good, though I thought "Bores" was a bit too slow.

The interview and songs should be available on the Janice Long website for at least the next several days, in case you missed it. They have not been archived yet, however-- I imagine within the next day or so?

  • I thought the most interesting item during the interview was when Morrissey mentioned that he was working on an autobiography... hmm.

Also, what was the novel that Janice and Morrissey spent some time discussing? I did not catch the title or author, as every few minutes the two of them sounded like they were speaking through megaphones due to varying stream quality.

  • Great to finally hear the new tracks in studio quality. Hope someone out there puts them up in MP3 format soon. My internet connection kept degrading even thought I have DSL.

Astonishing! No longer celibate! My connection cut off altogether when Janice kept needling him about who he "cuddles up to" when he needs to. He was saying good-naturedly "you don't deserve to know", etc. then I lost the stream it and had to restart my audio browser. What did he finally say before she changed topics?

However Irish Blood, English Heart was actually quite good, especially the intro. Shame he didn't showcase First Of The Gang To Die, which is the best of the new songs by far.

  • Listening to "I Like You" from the Janice Long session again, I have to say that Dean's drumming is incredibly good and powerful, with a nice hyperactive kick going that I didn't notice live nor have I heard on the previous MP3's. One can understand why Moz introduces him as "the best drummer we've ever had." He certainly adds an energy to the song that is addictive.

That said, Crashing Bores really is plodding, and I hope the tempo is picked up a bit on the final recorded version. And though I like Boz's songwriting quite a bit, could we avoid any further songs that rely upon an open chord on the downbeat, a la Glamorous Glue or the end of Crashing Bores? C'mon, Boz, mess around on the offbeat-- it's good for ya.

  • That was a weird interview.

Firstly he says he has never been on-line, then he says that this is a great site and there are others (how would he know if he'd never logged-on?).

Then about court case he says that he's been denied appeals without excuse. I would have believed this but a few weeks ago in the general discussion board someone called Loafing Oaf put up a very interesting transcript of the appeal verdict and it went into extraordinary and meticulous lengths to say WHY the appeal was rejected.

And it was weird when she asked him something and he said, cryptically, "it's... a matter of opinion" (name of lost Smiths song!). Was that some veiled clue that he's going to be bringing it into the set? If he'll cover Gilbert O'Sullivan then anything can happen...

And I thought he should have done 'First of Gang' and 'Mexico' instead of 'Bores' and 'I Like You'. But that's just me....

  • Truely insperational interview. Morrissey sounded happy and good hearted. I must point out the greatest line in my opinion from the interview, When Morrissey was asked why have you not got a record deal he said, the record companies always ask him the same thing, "Will your music fit in with what is popular and what is in the charts today", he replies, as he always does with the same answer, "Good God i hope not!" Go on Mozza Son!

  • Listening to the interview again and I just cannot get over the Irish accent.....how long has he talked like this ??

Plus the contradiction - I have "NEVER" been on line but he thinks morrissey-solo is a GREAT website and there are other great websites. How would he know ???

Ah well - he must have his reasons !!!

Slightly cringe inducing moment when Morrissey
was asked whether he went "cruising" in LA. Poor old Janice meant "cruising" as in "driving" but cruising has a very different meaning as well - especially in LA ! - of looking for casual sex. There was a slight pause there !!!
    Anonymous -- Thursday October 03 2002, @01:49AM (#43875)
  • What Question did Janice ask when - asking about inspirations in LA - she said something like "Do you go to the Gay ?" and then Morrissey exclaimed "To the Gay ? No I do not go to the Gay"
What is "the Gay ?" or was it just my radio reception ???

  • How fantastic it was to hear the voice of Moz again last night. I thought this was a warm and wonderful interview in which Morrissey displayed his usual wit and rebellion, especially when explaining his desire to disrupt the music industry which I thought was particularly wonderful, especially the part where he discribed his discussions with record labels in the States ending with him out on the pavement because his reaction to "will your music fit in" was "I sincerely hope not".
As for the songs, I am absolutely in love with ' I like you' true Moz i feel. 'Irish heart, English blood was also brill and 'The world is full of crashing bores' has grown on me since hearing it at the RAH.
Please, please let him get a record deal soon.
    Love you Morrissey

  • isn't something I do often, especially not at midnight, but it was highly enjoyable. Morrissey's voice sounded incredibly deep. It was good to hear the songs again after seeing him this month. I'm not entirely sure about the bit in 'crashing bores' where it sounds a bit like the new 'Appleton' tune, but apart from that, the songs are lush and great.

I'm tired of hearing his views on popstars (yeah, he hates manufactured pop, don't we all?), the court case and L.A. though. I could think of several million things I'd rather ask him.

  • It was great to hear Morrissey last night, he was on top form. He has the most gorgeous speaking voice - I think he should narrate "A Book at Bedtime", it would be very soothing!! It was quite disappointed to hear him going on about the court case and record companies again - I know he has had a hard time recently but if he discusses it too much the press will pick up on it and say he is bitter etc and focus on that rather than his talent as a songwriter and performer. Look at the Lynn Barber piece in the Observer the other week.

The interview was great, Janice Long and Morrissey are obviously old mates and he seemed very relaxed and happy. I'm so glad he is "back" (on our radios again), it just hasn't been the same without him!

    Definitely worth staying up for.

However, it was profoundly depressing to realise that the music I like is played on Radio 2. I thought that was a station for old farts like my dad....

  • I have previously said that the Janice Long show isn't normally available at a later date which is generally true, however sessions are often replayed and it looks like the Morrissey session will feature again via the Web.
To quote from her Radio 2 Home page [bbc.co.uk]:

    Hear Morrissey!

If you missed him or simply want to hear it all over again, you'll be able to replay it from here very soon...

    Great!

  • As perusual HE never ceases to contradict himself.

He NEVER goes on the internet, but somehow knows that the websites dedicated to him are 'very good indeed'.

He DOESN'T read newspapers or go on the internet but seems to be distressed by any appearance or soundbite made by 'Surreltonjohn'. Is it possible that 'Surreltonjohn' turned down advances made by Mozzy - he does seem to have a bug up his ass about the man.

Janice, ever the professional, was not going to take on Mozzy in the argument stakes - she was only too grateful to have him as studio guest.

As is usual, with Moz and the media, all we hear is lies, lies and more untruths.

I don't think he is capable of telling the TRUTH at this stage.......
    Anonymous -- Thursday October 03 2002, @02:43PM (#44034)
    • Must admit he would come across as more truthful if he were to say "I hardly ever...." instead of "I Never..."

With a multi million pound settlement at stake Mike Joyce's lawyers must be whooping with joy everytime they gather more evidence of Morrissey's "untruths". Don't get me wrong - Joyce was "just a drummer" and didn't/doesn't deserve 25% royalties or whatever he is claiming. But Morrissey must realise that the reason the appeal judges won't budge (and why it's going to the European court) is that Morrissey doesn't come over as a "dependable" witness as it were. When it comes down to your word against his, Morrissey has a history of contradictions and sadly that will work against him whatever the individual merits of the Royalties case.

I think that Marr has called it a day and settled with Joyce and Rourke settled out of court. But Morrissey is insisting on taking it to Europe. Always strikes me that there is a bit of a Jeffrey Archer about this.

Light the touch paper and stand well back.....

    • you know what that's all about don't you?
morrissey wants to present himself to "US" and the rest of the world that he is very old school, romantic, intellectual and can't take on such petty tasks as "surfing the internet" or reading "Page Six"

I could just see Oscar Wilde if he were alive today, sitting on the Spanish Steps with a laptop, cell phone and pager while in the other he's grasping onto a "People magazine" and a Venti Starbucks coffee of the day for dear life. RIGHT!
you know there is nothing like holding a book in your hands. the internet is not a "primary source"
we do have to change with the times
but Morrissey is too classy to say he's all over the internet and loves shopping on amazon.com and Ebay
